The Peaks

Mountains were once feared by humans. They were perceived as "the ruined earth," evidence of God's punishment for the sins of the original pair.

Time changes everything. Mountains — slowly. And human notions, quickly, with new readings of biblical texts, the coming of geological science, poets, walkers, and other celebrants.

The Peaks are magic, aren't they? Shape shifting, color changing, chameleons of light and shadow. Sometimes wreathed with clouds, sometimes dressed in yellow, sometimes showing white. Always interesting. And calling to us.

I especially like the intimacy of mountain trails. The acrid smells of the aspen cycle. Whisperings from quaking leaves. And glimpses of sky. Somehow everything bound together.
