Good Fence (Between 4025 and 4045 Lake Mary Road, Flagstaff)
Good fences make good neighbors, it’s true,
What about the one between me and you?
You on your side, I on mine
Minding our business till the time
You saw me over top of slats
I got word, started looking back.
It started slow, peek here and there
Did my best not to stare
But as days went by and by
That fence became a magnet for you and I
My dog put paws up high on our side
You lifted your daughter, she'd smile down wide
Soon all saw the view from each side of wood
And if we were together, all was good.
That fence heard cheery “Good Morning!” hi’s,
Eavesdropped on whispered moonlight goodbyes.
Saw exotic goods—garlic, laundry—lifted over top
Must have wondered when we would stop.
That fence stood plumb and tall
As boundaries between us grew ever small
It became hard to know just where to be
Side with you or side with me?
So we bought a house that’s strong and true
Your dad built a new fence around it with you
Dog rolls in the grass, dog smile on face
Daughter climbs tree with tomboy grace.
That fence in our past kept us apart a bit
But look back today and admit
Look over our new fence, and you might see
Not just good neighbors but a family.
